OAFP Urges Health Care Access for Asylum-Seekers in Sheridan
On July 7, 2018, OAFP sent letters to the Portland Field Office Director for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and to the warden at the Federal Correction Institution in Sheridan. The letter urges the officials to ensure that more than 100 men seeking asylum in the US, who are being held at Sheridan, receive access to health care in accordance with agency policy. Reporting from the Oregon Congressional delegation which visited the facility indicates that the men were not receiving such care. AAFP Policy regarding incarceration and health support family physicians’ advocacy on behalf these individuals.
