AAFP Events
AAFP Family Medicine Advocacy Summit
What is it: This event brings together AAFP members from across the country to meet with their federal delegation and talk about the pressing issues impacting family medicine. Attendees get education on primary care policy issues, learn effective advocacy strategies, and have an opportunity to network with their colleagues.
The offer: OAFP will defray all costs of attending the AAFP Family Medicine Advocacy Summit in Washington DC for one member in each congressional district. Covered expenses include:
- Registration for the conference (AAFP offers CME for this event)
- Coach airfare, round-trip, for the member – booked as early as is feasible
- Up to three nights’ hotel costs in DC (usually at the headquarter hotel)
- Per diem stipend to cover meals and ground transportation
- Additional expenses will be covered upon request for individuals who must drive 100+ miles to their nearest feasible airport (e.g., an additional hotel night near their departure airport, mileage to the airport)
Application process: Review the list of “open” delegation roles and complete the application here no later than February 12 . Selected applicants will be notified by March 15. The application will ask:
- Name
- Practice type
- Congressional district
- Policy experience or interest (100 words or fewer)
- Motivation for applying (100 words or fewer)
- Whether you have an existing relationship with your Congressional Representative or Senator
Selection process: The OAFP Executive Committee will review applications and evaluate them against criteria including prior experience, ability to commit to two years’ attendance; existing relationship with legislator(s).
Commitment: Life happens, and we understand that it is difficult to commit to attending this event more than one year in advance. That said, attendees report that they feel more comfortable in the second year of attendance, so we ask that attendees provisionally agree to attend for two years. You should be willing to serve as an “Advocacy Ambassador” for your congressional representative.
AAFP National Conference of Constituency Leaders
What is it: The AAFP National Conference of Constituency Leaders (NCCL) is the AAFP’s leadership development event that empowers a select group of change makers to catalyze positive change in family medicine. NCCL will inspire you to build on your leadership skills and create a lasting impact for current and future generations of family physicians. Each year, OAFP endeavors to send one delegate from each member constituency as defined by AAFP: New Physicians (< 7 years of practice); Women; International Medical Graduates, BIPOC, and LGBTQIA+ physicians or physician allies. If you are uncertain which constituency or constituencies might align with your identity, OAFP staff are happy to offer guidance.

They will forward a slate of nominees to the Executive Committee for final selection.
Commitment: Life happens, and we understand that it may be difficult to commit to attending this event for more than one year. That said, attendees report that they feel that the first year is spent learning how the event works, their second year they’re able to more actively participate and drive policy ideas, and in their third year, they’d be able to help mentor newer attendees. For this reason, we ask that attendees provisionally agree to attend for three years.
